(JUBA) – The South Sudan National Bureau of Standards (SSNBS) has hosted discussions with the Central Equatoria Business Union (CEBU) and international partners including BTECH Germany and the Pan African Alliance of Small and Medium Industries.
The talks centred on supporting small and medium enterprises (SMEs), harmonising trade standards, and exploring investment opportunities in South Sudan.
The Pan African Alliance delegation emphasised that SMEs remain the backbone of Africa’s economy. They called for the harmonisation of standards across the continent to create stronger links under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). According to the group, this will help local businesses in South Sudan access wider regional markets while ensuring product safety and quality.
BTECH Germany expressed particular interest in South Sudan’s energy and technology sectors. The company, which has a global presence, produces household appliances such as televisions, fridges, washing machines, dryers, air conditioners, gas cookers and electric cookers. It is best known for its high quality televisions, ranging from LCD and LED models to the latest OLED and 4K Ultra High Definition smart TVs with internet connectivity.
The company said it is exploring possible investments in the South Sudanese market and requested guidance from SSNBS on the applicable national standards and regulatory framework. BTECH Germany added that its products are designed to make modern living more convenient and that it is keen to contribute to South Sudan’s growth by introducing energy efficient and high-technology appliances.
In her remarks, the Executive Director of SSNBS commended CEBU for building international partnerships and reaffirmed the Bureau’s commitment to enforcing standards and ensuring safe and quality trade in South Sudan. She also noted that such partnerships will help strengthen SMEs and promote economic diversification.
A statement from the Standards body said the engagement reflects growing recognition of South Sudan’s role in regional trade and investment, particularly as more businesses and international partners look towards opportunities under AfCFTA.
