(MOSCOW, RUSSIA) –<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0Ukraine launched a massive drone offensive against the Russian capital region, with Moscow claiming it downed more than 1,000 unmanned aerial vehicles in what marks one of the largest coordinated strikes deep inside Russian territory since the full scale invasion began. The attacks successfully struck the Moscow refinery, Sheremetyevo International Airport, and a critical fuel pumping station and oil depot northwest of the city, triggering fires and significant disruption across the capital.<\/span><\/p>\n

The operation represents a dramatic shift in the war’s geographic reality. For ordinary Russians living in the capital city, the conflict their dictator launched in their name has now returned home with devastating effect. Millions of residents felt the explosions, heard the drones overhead, and experienced the war firsthand for the first time. Car alarms rang out across residential complexes as shock waves rippled through neighbourhoods, while falling debris from intercepted drones and malfunctioning surface to air missiles crashed into apartment buildings.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Sonechnogorsk fuel pumping station, located just outside the Moscow ring road and approximately a 54 minute drive northwest of the city centre, suffered direct hits. The facility supplies petrol and diesel to the capital. High resolution satellite imagery confirmed four storage tanks were destroyed, with others remaining operational and potentially vulnerable to future strikes. Drone netting installed on the tanks proved ineffective against the attack.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sheremetyevo International Airport experienced disruption after a drone crashed on the premises, causing a minor fire and forcing a temporary shutdown. Travellers faced delays as flights were suspended. The Moscow refinery, the eighth largest in Russia and located less than 500 kilometres from the Ukrainian border, was struck for the third time since September 2024. A single drone penetrated the capital’s multi layered air defence network and hit a distillation tower. Previous strikes occurred on 1 September 2024 and 11 March 2025.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed the country’s Foreign Intelligence Service obtained Russian documents assessing the aggressor state’s war losses. The documents reveal that a single minor Russian oil company has been forced to shut down approximately 400 wells. Restarting production in Russia poses significant challenges because oil and gas fields are located in the Arctic, where the ground remains frozen most of the year and maintaining well pressure after a shutdown is difficult. Ukraine’s strategy of striking export terminals and pumping stations creates a bottleneck. If oil cannot be stored or shipped, production must halt regardless of whether drones reach the Arctic wells themselves.<\/span><\/p>\n

Defence Minister Fedorov announced Ukraine has developed a new glide bomb through the Brave 1 initiative, with development taking 17 months and a warhead weighing 250 kilogrammes. The weapon represents Ukraine’s growing capacity for domestic arms production, reducing reliance on donated weapons from Western allies. This shift ensures Russia cannot target partner nations like Britain, Germany or France for supplying munitions. Several European nations are now providing funding, expertise and technicians to help Ukraine develop its own defence systems.<\/span><\/p>\n

Russian state media, controlled by the Kremlin, chose not to report on the attacks. During the strikes, top stories on TASS covered attempts to initiate peace talks with Europe. Vesti reported on the Russian dictator meeting an old school teacher. RIA Novosti focused on events in Iran. The silence from official outlets contrasted sharply with a flood of videos appearing on social media, where Russians using VPNs shared their experiences on Telegram.<\/span><\/p>\n

One video captured a Russian woman hearing and experiencing air defence explosions for the first time, a sensation Ukrainian women have endured almost daily for over four years. Another showed a woman reaching breaking point after falling debris damaged a new car she had saved up to purchase for her parents. The personal loss, rather than the war’s 1.3 million Russian casualties, triggered her despair.<\/span><\/p>\n

This domestic reaction marks a turning point. The President of Finland noted Russian support for the war is declining sharply for two reasons. Ukraine is winning on the battlefield and long range strikes are making the war real for residents of St. Petersburg and Moscow. The population is unhappy about internet shutdowns and the blocking of Telegram and WhatsApp. People are beginning to ask why they are in this war and what they gain from losing so many young men on the battlefield.<\/span><\/p>\n

A prominent Russian military blogger stated the situation on the front means Russia will either face a new mobilisation this autumn or move towards signing a peace treaty, with no third option available. Military bloggers who previously supported the war are turning on the Kremlin, recognising deep strikes make continued operations unsustainable. In an astonishing clip, oligarch Konstantin Malofeev, a minor billionaire who controls an Orthodox broadcasting channel, told viewers there is no shame in losing to Ukraine, describing Ukrainians as essentially Russian and suggesting Russians never truly lose.<\/span><\/p>\n

Zelensky signalled there will be more deep strikes, stating long range capabilities are significantly changing the situation and the world’s perception of Russia’s war. He noted many partners now see how reachability of Russian targets has transformed attitudes towards the conflict. Russia’s perception of inevitable victory has been shattered, creating a bandwagon effect where potential allies are less likely to join a perceived losing side.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Kremlin has expressed interest in restoring dialogue with Europe while simultaneously showing frustration with Washington. Moscow signalled contacts with the Trump administration remain slow and difficult, with American attention distracted by the war with Iran. The Russian objective in any peace talks remains unchanged, to pressure Ukraine into surrender through American mediation.<\/span><\/p>\n

Russia’s domestic economic picture continues to deteriorate. Small business closures are rising across the country. The banking sector faces a latent crisis with bad assets breaching the critical 10 per cent threshold. While large state industries are being propped up, ordinary businesses are being wiped out. The Kremlin is also attempting to fast track Russian citizenship for residents of Transnistria, a move Moldovan President Maia Sandu decried as a recruitment tool for war, since citizenship entails military obligation.<\/span><\/p>\n

On the battlefield, Ukraine hit its fourth Russian ship of the month in the Caspian Sea, an FSB border patrol boat of Project 10410 based out of Dagestan. Additional Firepoint drone strikes targeted a TOR M2 air defence system, a communications tower in Crimea, fuel cars on a rail convoy, port infrastructure in Berdansk used for importing military equipment and exporting stolen Ukrainian grain, and an FSB command centre.<\/span><\/p>\n
