(MOSCOW) – Public frustration is rising across Russia after a wave of large scale Ukrainian drone strikes hit Moscow and other regions, prompting criticism of the Kremlin, growing concern over the war economy and renewed questions over the leadership of Russian dictator Vladimir Putin.<\/p>\n
The attacks came as Putin arrived in Beijing for talks with Chinese leader Xi Jinping, where the two sides are expected to discuss dozens of new cooperation agreements. Analysts on Russia and Ukraine increasingly view China as seeking to maintain Russian stability while gradually expanding its own economic and political leverage over Moscow.<\/p>\n
Inside Russia, the impact of Ukraine\u2019s expanding drone campaign has become increasingly visible. Russian military commentators and bloggers described the recent strikes on Moscow as among the most humiliating security failures since the Second World War.<\/p>\n
Ukrainian forces are also increasing pressure on Russia\u2019s land corridor linking occupied Crimea with southern Russia through occupied Ukrainian territory along the Azov coast. Ukrainian long range drone operations have reportedly struck military logistics and fuel convoys along the M14 highway and routes connecting Rostov on Don with occupied Mariupol.<\/p>\n
According to reports circulating in Russian military channels, Ukrainian drones are now regularly operating at distances of up to 150 kilometres behind the front line, targeting transport routes critical to sustaining Russian military operations in occupied Crimea and southern Ukraine.<\/p>\n
Russian state television commentators increasingly acknowledge that Moscow is struggling to counter Ukraine\u2019s rapidly growing drone capabilities. Russian military analyst Andrei Klintsevich warned that Ukraine could soon launch up to 1,000 drones per day against Russian infrastructure and cities.<\/p>\n
Klintsevich admitted Russian air defence missile production was expensive and difficult to scale rapidly, adding that Russia would likely need alternative technologies, including laser systems, to respond effectively. He also warned that future warfare could involve widespread deployment of robotic systems, including autonomous drones and robotic ground units.<\/p>\n
At the same time, Ukraine continues accelerating development of its unmanned systems. Ukraine\u2019s Unmanned Systems Forces released new combat footage showing drones equipped with multiple missile launch systems striking Russian military targets. The footage appeared to show drones firing several missiles during a single sortie against Russian positions and communications infrastructure linked to Russia\u2019s Black Sea Fleet.<\/p>\n
The rapid pace of Ukrainian drone innovation has raised concerns among Russian military observers, who increasingly describe Ukraine as gaining a technological advantage in several areas of the war.<\/p>\n
Further pressure may emerge against Russia\u2019s energy sector. Denys Shtilerman , co founder of Ukrainian defence company Fire Point, said Ukraine could eventually impose a low cost drone based disruption campaign against Russian oil exports in both the Black Sea and Baltic Sea.<\/p>\n
He described scenarios in which drones could threaten tankers transporting Russian oil, potentially disrupting one of the Kremlin\u2019s most important sources of wartime revenue.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, criticism inside Russia continues to intensify. Russian bloggers accused state media of concealing the scale of recent Ukrainian attacks and failing to accurately report growing insecurity inside Russia.<\/p>\n
Some prominent nationalist commentators criticised Putin directly for failing to publicly address the nation following the strikes on Moscow. Others questioned why the Kremlin leader rarely visits Russian regions exposed to Ukrainian attacks.<\/p>\n
A number of Russian commentators have openly discussed the possibility of replacing Putin with Sergei Kiriyenko, deputy head of the presidential administration and a senior Kremlin official closely linked to domestic political management and information operations.<\/p>\n
Russian economic indicators are also worsening. Members of the State Duma reportedly warned that wartime expenditure now consumes around 40% of the federal budget, while major industrial sectors continue declining sharply.<\/p>\n
Russian machinery manufacturers reported production falling by 51% in the first quarter, while property markets across major Russian cities continue deteriorating. New apartment sales reportedly fell by 37% in Moscow and nearly 49% in Volgograd compared with the previous year.<\/p>\n
Russian consumers are also reducing spending on clothing and footwear to levels reportedly not seen in more than a decade as inflation and economic uncertainty continue affecting household budgets.<\/p>\n
In the Irkutsk region, residents publicly appealed to Moscow to seek Chinese financial assistance for construction of schools after years of delays and underfunding. In an unusually direct statement, residents said closer ties with China may represent their only remaining path for development.<\/p>\n
Polling data from Russian state linked organisations also indicates rising dissatisfaction with the Kremlin\u2019s handling of the war and economy, particularly as Ukrainian drone attacks increasingly reach deep inside Russian territory.<\/p>\n
Russian propagandist Margarita Simonyan acknowledged publicly that members of her family have been sheltering for a month from Ukrainian drone attacks in Moscow, highlighting growing concern among sections of the Russian elite.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, reports emerged that the administration of Donald Trump<\/span><\/span> is seeking technology transfer agreements involving Ukraine\u2019s advanced drone systems. According to reports cited by Bloomberg, Washington is pushing for access to Ukrainian drone related intellectual property as part of future defence cooperation arrangements.<\/p>\n
