(KYIV, UKRAINE) –<\/strong> Ukrainian forces have largely halted Russia’s spring and summer 2026 offensive, with Russian troops losing territory for a second consecutive month, according to assessments cited by the Washington based Institute for the Study of War (ISW).<\/p>\n

The reported territorial losses mark a significant development after a prolonged period during which Russian forces had maintained limited gains across several sectors of the front.<\/p>\n

The fighting continues despite the substantial military, economic and political costs Russia has incurred since launching its full scale invasion. Ukrainian officials and analysts point to the growing effectiveness of Ukrainian drone operations and continued resistance along the front line as key factors behind recent battlefield developments.<\/p>\n

According to Ukrainian accounts, military operations have helped secure strategically important areas and maintain pressure on critical transport routes, including roads linking occupied Crimea with Russian held territories in southern Ukraine.<\/p>\n

The developments come as Russian missile and drone attacks against Ukrainian cities continue almost nightly. Residents across Ukraine, including in Kyiv, have regularly spent nights in shelters as air defence systems respond to incoming ballistic missiles and drones.<\/p>\n

Many Ukrainians affected by the attacks say the strikes have strengthened rather than weakened public resolve. The ongoing bombardments have reinforced opposition to any territorial concessions and strengthened support for continued resistance against Russian aggression.<\/p>\n

Speaking in a video update, Ukrainian commentator Anna from Ukraine argued that many Ukrainians believe any negotiated settlement that rewards territorial seizure would only encourage future aggression.<\/p>\n

She said Russian demands that Ukraine surrender parts of Donetsk and Luhansk regions remain unacceptable to most Ukrainians, noting that the territories are internationally recognised as part of Ukraine and were also recognised as such by Russia in agreements signed after the collapse of the Soviet Union.<\/p>\n

Analysts have also warned that recognising territorial gains achieved through military force could create wider international security risks by encouraging similar actions elsewhere.<\/p>\n

Ukraine maintains that the war extends beyond control of territory and reflects broader Russian ambitions to expand political influence across former Soviet regions.<\/p>\n

At the same time, Ukrainian long range drone operations have increasingly targeted military infrastructure deep inside Russia. Recent strikes have reportedly disrupted defence related facilities and military production sites far from the front line, including areas around Moscow and St Petersburg.<\/p>\n

Ukraine has also expanded its ability to conduct operations against military assets in regions previously considered beyond the reach of Ukrainian forces. Reports in recent months have included missile alerts and security incidents in Russia’s Arctic regions.<\/p>\n

The military developments coincide with growing economic pressure inside Russia. Russian officials, including senior financial figures, have publicly warned about the increasing burden of military spending on state finances.<\/p>\n

According to reports cited in the video, approximately one third of Russia’s federal budget is now directed towards defence and security related expenditures. Russian authorities have nevertheless signalled plans for continued spending despite mounting fiscal pressures.<\/p>\n

The Kremlin has repeatedly maintained that its military objectives remain unchanged. However, some Russian military commentators and nationalist bloggers have increasingly questioned the effectiveness of the campaign and criticised the pace of progress on the battlefield.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Russian missile and drone attacks continue to inflict civilian casualties across Ukraine.<\/p>\n

In Kyiv, four people were reported killed following recent attacks, although casualty figures remained subject to revision as emergency services continued rescue operations.<\/p>\n

In Dnipro, officials reported at least 12 people injured during separate strikes.<\/p>\n

Witnesses described civilians rushing to shelters as air raid sirens sounded, while emergency crews worked through the night to respond to damage caused by missile impacts and falling debris.<\/p>\n

Despite the attacks, many Ukrainians interviewed after spending hours in shelters said the bombardments had strengthened national unity and increased public support for the armed forces.<\/p>\n

Residents emerging from shelters at dawn described a renewed determination to support military personnel, humanitarian efforts and community initiatives.<\/p>\n

Ukraine continues to insist that lasting peace can only be achieved through the restoration of its internationally recognised borders and the withdrawal of Russian forces from occupied territories.<\/p>\n

The Institute for the Study of War’s latest assessments suggest that while fighting remains intense, Ukrainian forces have succeeded in slowing Russia’s latest offensive and, in some areas, reversing recent gains.<\/p>\n
