(PARIS, FRANCE)<\/b> – An investigation has revealed what is being described as one of the most significant intelligence failures in the history of the Russian Federation. The investigative group The Insider has uncovered the existence and operational details of a clandestine Russian unit known as Center 795. This elite group, which allegedly conducted assassinations and covert operations across international borders, was compromised by a remarkably basic lapse in tradecraft when an operative utilised Google Translate for sensitive communications.<\/p>\n
According to the report, this error allowed the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation to monitor the unit’s communications in real time. The elite unit, which was designed to be untraceable, unravelled as a result of digital footprints that investigators have been tracking for several years. Roman Dobrokhotov, the Editor-in-Chief of The Insider, stated that while the Russian intelligence services frequently suffer from inefficiency and low motivation, digital traces remain their greatest vulnerability.<\/p>\n
Center 795 was established following the full-scale invasion of Ukraine to serve as a super secret and autonomous entity. It comprised over 500 hand-picked officers from the FSB and the GRU military intelligence. To maintain total secrecy, the unit operated under the cover of Rostec, a state-owned Russian military production conglomerate, and utilised encrypted messengers. However, an operative attempting to recruit a Serbian agent to kidnap a Chechen opposition figure, Akhmed Zakayev, in the United Kingdom, used Google Translate to relay instructions. The operative failed to consider that American authorities could access Google\u2019s data during an investigation.<\/p>\n
The investigation has also highlighted the involvement of high-profile figures close to the Russian dictator, Vladimir Putin. Sergei Chemezov, a former KGB colleague of the dictator and head of Rostec, is named as a key figure. The revelation is particularly damaging for Chemezov, who had reportedly sought to distance himself from the security services to avoid international sanctions. Other figures identified include billionaire Andrei Bokarev and operational leaders such as Denis Fisenko and the recently arrested Denis Alimov.<\/p>\n
The exposure of Center 795 comes amidst reports of intense internal friction within the Russian intelligence community. Competing factions within the FSB and GRU are reportedly blaming one another for continued failures in Ukraine. Mr Dobrokhotov noted that the dictator appears increasingly paranoid, with visible security increases and mobile internet disruptions in central Moscow suggesting fears of a potential coup. Despite being on a Russian “kill list” himself, Mr Dobrokhotov maintains that the publication of dozens of operative names and photographs means the unit can no longer function effectively.<\/p>\n
