(ST PETERSBURG, RUSSIA) – A Russian state media commentator has fled the country and is seeking asylum after alleging threats from the Federal Security Service, in what observers say reflects growing unease within Kremlin aligned circles.<\/p>\n
According to reports from Jake Broe, a prominent YouTuber on Ukraine, the past month has seen a shift in tone among some Russian commentators following an incident in which a propagandist who criticised the war was reportedly confined to a psychiatric facility in St Petersburg.<\/p>\n
Since then, several prominent bloggers and commentators have publicly questioned the continuation of the war, with some describing it as futile.<\/p>\n
One such figure, Viktor Olivich, a political analyst regularly appearing on the state broadcaster NTV as an expert on American affairs, has left Russia after what he described as repeated threats from the FSB.<\/p>\n
Olivich, a familiar presence on Russian state television, said agents first threatened him at his home in December and again in February. He suggested the pressure may have involved attempts at coercion or financial extortion.<\/p>\n
He has since travelled to Greece, where he is currently seeking asylum through the United States embassy. Reports indicate he holds a US passport.<\/p>\n
His decision to request asylum comes amid uncertainty over how such cases may be handled, particularly given political sensitivities in Washington under Donald Trump toward the Kremlin<\/p>\n
Analysts note that individuals in Olivich\u2019s position may possess information of interest to Western intelligence agencies, including the CIA, particularly if they are prepared to cooperate as defectors.<\/p>\n
The developments point to signs of strain within Russia\u2019s state controlled media environment, where dissent has historically been tightly suppressed.<\/p>\n
