(BUDAPEST) – Hungary\u2019s new political leadership has pledged to investigate alleged corruption linked to former Prime Minister Viktor Orb\u00e1n\u2019s administration, amid claims that officials attempted to destroy sensitive documents as power changed hands.<\/p>\n
Speaking on Times Radio\u2019s Frontline programme, analyst Diane Francis said reports indicated Orb\u00e1n allies were seen burning documents inside government offices shortly after the election result. The new leadership has vowed to halt such actions, citing concerns over hidden agreements and corrupt practices. It has also signalled an end to Russian influence within Hungarian state institutions.<\/p>\n
Francis said the incoming government had referred the matter to prosecutors in Brussels, raising the prospect of legal action against Orb\u00e1n. She described his removal as significant for Europe, arguing that his administration had undermined both the European Union and NATO while maintaining close ties to Moscow.<\/p>\n
The new prime minister has indicated support for European unity and Ukraine, including a willingness to unblock a proposed \u20ac90 billion financial package for Kyiv, equivalent to approximately $97 billion. The funding is considered vital for Ukraine\u2019s economic stability as the war continues.<\/p>\n
However, the government has not committed to accelerating Ukraine\u2019s accession to the EU, noting broader resistance among some European states. Analysts say Hungary\u2019s shift may strengthen European cohesion but does not eliminate internal divisions.<\/p>\n
Russia has responded cautiously. Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Moscow was prepared to work with Hungary\u2019s new leadership depending on its policy direction. Analysts interpret this as part of a wider contest for influence in Europe.<\/p>\n
Francis argued that Ukraine\u2019s strategy of targeting Russia\u2019s economic base, particularly its oil export infrastructure, is increasingly effective. She said Ukrainian strikes had reduced Russian export capacity significantly, offsetting any gains from fluctuating global oil prices.<\/p>\n
She also noted that Ukraine\u2019s growing defence technology sector, particularly in drone warfare, has strengthened its international partnerships. Kyiv is seeking new defence agreements, including with Gulf states, which could provide additional financial support.<\/p>\n
On the broader geopolitical landscape, Francis said Russia\u2019s position had weakened following disruptions to its partnerships, including with Iran. She also pointed to internal pressures within Russia, including tightened information controls and increased security measures around key locations.<\/p>\n
Despite ongoing Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities, Francis said there was no indication Ukraine would reduce its resistance. She stressed the need for continued Western military and financial support, particularly in air defence.<\/p>\n
The discussion also highlighted shifting dynamics in Europe, with new leadership in Hungary seen as part of a broader trend towards stronger alignment against Russian influence.<\/p>\n
