(KYIV, UKRAINE) – Russian territorial advances in Ukraine have collapsed by 92.8 percent since January, with Moscow’s forces now paying an exponentially higher price in casualties and financial resources for each square kilometre captured, according to newly compiled battlefield data.<\/p>\n
Analysis of the first quarter of 2026 reveals a dramatic erosion of Russian offensive momentum. In January, Russian forces captured 319 square kilometres at a cost of approximately 99 personnel casualties per square kilometre. By February, territorial gains had fallen to 123 square kilometres, with the casualty rate rising to 258 personnel per square kilometre. March saw gains plummet to just 23 square kilometres, roughly one third the size of Manhattan, while the human cost surged to 1,537 personnel per square kilometre. Ukrainian counterattacks erased part of what Russia had previously secured.<\/p>\n
The financial implications are equally stark. In March alone, Russia expended an estimated 600 million dollars for each square kilometre of Ukrainian territory seized. This equates to approximately 1.55 billion dollars per square mile. The deterioration represents a 1,453 percent increase in the cost per unit of ground gained compared to January figures.<\/p>\n
Dr Jason Smart, a national security adviser and special correspondent, contextualised these figures against Russia’s total military budget. “Their entire military budget is about 165.6 billion dollars. If you are spending that much just per square kilometre, it does not look like they will be taking much of Ukraine, even if they spent all their money on it,” he said.<\/p>\n
The collapse in Russian battlefield efficiency coincides with significant Ukrainian advances in drone defence capabilities, particularly over the Black Sea. For much of the conflict, Russia exploited its ability to launch drone attacks from maritime approaches, where interception was previously impossible. Ukraine has now demonstrated the capacity to neutralise these threats before they reach land, removing a critical Russian tactical advantage.<\/p>\n
Data from March indicates that Ukraine neutralised 90.25 percent of all incoming drones, a marked improvement from February’s rate of 85.6 percent and December’s figure of 80.2 percent. Overall air defence effectiveness reached 89.9 percent in March. Ukrainian forces stopped approximately 33,000 enemy unmanned aerial vehicles during the month, double the number intercepted in February.<\/p>\n
The strategic significance of this development extends beyond the immediate defensive benefit. Russian drone operations have served a dual purpose: direct strikes against Ukrainian targets and the saturation of air defence systems to facilitate subsequent missile attacks. On the night of April 15 to April 16, Russia launched 659 drones and 44 missiles at Ukraine, a ratio of approximately 15 drones per missile. By neutralising the drone swarms, Ukraine degrades Russia’s ability to conduct effective combined strikes.<\/p>\n
“Russia does not have the ability to have anything counterable within their own country. They, for that matter, do not even have internet all the time,” Dr Smart observed. “Because Ukraine is more effective and has a technological advantage, it is able to fight a war that behooves it.”<\/p>\n
The shift in aerial warfare is complemented by Ukraine’s sustained campaign against Russian strategic infrastructure. Overnight strikes again targeted the Tuapse oil facility, one of Russia’s major refining complexes. Additional Ukrainian operations hit two air bases in occupied Crimea, destroying Russian Pantsir and Buk air defence systems as well as OSA surface to air missile platforms. Oil depots and fleet ammunition storage sites were also struck.<\/p>\n
Further inland, Ukrainian forces conducted a notable attack on the Atlant facility in Tangorog, a key production site for Orion drone components. The strike directly targets Russia’s ability to replenish its own drone fleet at a time when Ukrainian counter drone capabilities are improving.<\/p>\n
The cumulative effect of these pressures is beginning to reshape the strategic calculus of the conflict. Dr Smart articulated the fundamental asymmetry in objectives between the two sides. “The Russians, because they wish to physically take territory, have little choice. They have to slug it out on the battlefield. But these sorts of gains, it is very obvious that is not going to work no matter what they do. The Ukrainians, their objective is to stop the Russian invasion. The means of doing that is by stopping Russia’s ability to wage war.”<\/p>\n
This approach extends beyond military targets to encompass the political stability of the Russian regime itself. Dr Smart drew historical parallels to previous Russian defeats and their domestic consequences. The Tsarist Empire’s loss to Japan in 1905 shattered perceptions of competence at the apex of power and fatally weakened the monarchy ahead of the First World War. The Soviet Union’s failure in Afghanistan similarly eroded public faith in the leadership’s promises of strength while ordinary citizens endured declining living standards.<\/p>\n
“The war in Ukraine is increasingly looking like that. We see more signs every day within Russia. The people are questioning whether this war should continue, whether or not Vladimir Putin has perhaps gone mad,” Dr Smart said. “Ukraine does not need just one theatrical collapse. It needs Russian pressure to get weaker and more expensive. That is how you can turn the war into something that is very dangerous for the ruler.”<\/p>\n
The Russian dictator’s reliance on drone warfare underscores the economic constraints facing the Kremlin. In 2025, Russia launched over 54,000 Shahed type drones at Ukraine, including more than 32,000 strike variants, averaging 148 total launches and 88 strike drones daily. March 2026 saw 6,462 launches, averaging 208 per day, a 41 percent increase over 2025 levels. At this pace, Russia launches one drone approximately every seven minutes.<\/p>\n
Yet despite the increased volume, the effectiveness of these attacks is diminishing as Ukrainian air defences improve. The combination of battlefield stalemate, mounting economic pressure, successful Ukrainian deep strikes, and enhanced defensive capabilities is creating a compounding crisis for the Kremlin.<\/p>\n
“Vladimir Putin today has picked a fight and he cannot win. Though his hubris does not allow him to yet see this, we are one day yet closer to the end of the Putin regime,” Dr Smart concluded.<\/p>\n
