(JUBA) – South Sudan has taken a major step forward in aviation development with the successful completion of its first night flight at Juba International Airport. The landmark test took place on the evening of 5 September 2025, when an Air Congo Boeing 737 safely departed at 10:15 PM en route to the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The test flight represents a breakthrough in the country’s aviation history, marking the transition of Juba International Airport into a facility capable of handling both daytime and night time operations. Aviation experts say this will improve connectivity, attract more regional airlines, and expand the airport’s role as a hub for trade and travel in East and Central Africa.

The achievement was made possible by major infrastructure upgrades at the airport. The South Sudan Civil Aviation Authority (SSCAA) confirmed that newly installed runway lighting systems and clearly marked runways were key to enabling night operations. These upgrades provide pilots with essential visual guidance during low visibility, night time flights, and adverse weather conditions.

Officials described the test as a “historic advancement” that strengthens both the safety and efficiency of air travel in South Sudan. It also aligns Juba International Airport with international aviation standards, building confidence among regional operators and global partners.

The improvements are part of a wider effort by the SSCAA to modernise the country’s main airport. Alongside lighting installations, the authority is currently overseeing the construction of a new embankment drainage system. The project aims to reduce flooding, safeguard airport infrastructure, and improve operational resilience during heavy rains.

The SSCAA hopes to position Juba International Airport as a reliable and competitive regional gateway by addressing long standing safety challenges. Improved infrastructure is expected to stimulate economic benefits by supporting tourism, facilitating business travel, and enabling faster delivery of goods.

South Sudan’s aviation reforms could strengthen its integration into regional trade blocs such as the East African Community, where efficient air transport is a critical driver of growth.

The Civil Aviation Authority said the next phase of reforms will focus on strengthening staff capacity, enhancing regulatory compliance, and continuing to upgrade infrastructure in line with global standards.

In a statement on online communication platforms, the aviation body said the inaugural night flight is not only a technical milestone but also as a symbol of progress for a country seeking to expand its connectivity, attract investment, and demonstrate readiness to participate fully in regional and global aviation networks.
