(KAPOETA, EASTERN EQUATORIA) – Boda boda riders in Kapoeta town have received funding worth 7,460,000 South Sudanese Pounds (about 1,051 US dollars) to support peace awareness and community outreach programmes.
The funds were handed over on Thursday by the Kapoeta Municipal Council in partnership with the Integrated Community Peace and Development Organization (ICPDO). The initiative aims to use the boda-boda association to promote dialogue, reduce tensions and encourage peaceful coexistence among communities.
Mayor Lotede Abraham, who presided over the handover, said the request for support came directly from the boda-boda group. He explained that the association had presented a plan to conduct peace rallies and awareness campaigns across the town.
“The money has been given to the boda boda riders to carry out peace awareness activities and to organise public rallies that spread messages of harmony,” Abraham said.
He urged the group to spend the funds responsibly and to ensure they are used strictly for the intended purposes:
“This support should not be diverted to personal use. It must be spent only on peace awareness programmes and related initiatives, in line with the guidance of both the government and the supporting organisation”
The chairperson of the boda boda association was not immediately available for comment.
According to local authorities in Kapoeta, involving boda boda riders in community initiatives could have a significant impact, as they are among the most visible and mobile groups in the town. Their regular interaction with residents allows them to act as messengers, not only for transport services but also for public campaigns, including peacebuilding.
Eastern Equatoria State, like other regions of South Sudan, continues to face sporadic tensions linked to local disputes. Authorities and development partners believe that grassroots campaigns such as this can help reduce conflict and support stability.
