(JUBA) – President Salva Kiir has instructed the Power Purchase Committee to implement reforms at Juba Electricity Distribution Company (JEDCO), with the goal of lowering charges for consumers and improving electricity services in the capital.
The directive followed a report by the committee on its review of the power purchase agreement signed between the government and Ezra Construction and Development Group, which runs the 100 megawatt power project in Juba.
The committee was formed in May to examine the agreement signed with Ezra Construction and Development Group and to assess why electricity tariffs in Juba remain high. Its task also included a review of the terms and conditions agreed between the Ministry of Energy and Dams and the company.
According to a statement from the Office of the President, Undersecretary in the Ministry of Energy and Dams Madhieu Acuil Mawien said the President asked the committee to reassess and align the contract with current realities. The reforms will include tariff cuts and changes to the distribution structure managed through JEDCO.
JEDCO is a public-private partnership between the government and Ezra Construction and Development Group. It is the sole electricity distributor in Juba, where power is generated at the Ezra Power Plant in Kondokoro. The plant supplies electricity only within Juba.
The review comes at a time when many residents and businesses in Juba have complained of high token charges, which limit access to affordable power. Reliable and cheaper electricity is seen as critical for both households and private sector development, especially for small and medium enterprises that often rely on costly fuel generators.
The reforms are expected to bring down tariffs, but exact figures have not yet been announced. The Ministry of Energy said more details will be shared once the revised terms are finalised.
