(RUMBEK, LAKES STATE) – A senior delegation from the Bank of South Sudan (BoSS), led by the Director General for Banking Operations, Dr Chan Andrea Chan, has carried out a final inspection of the newly renovated BoSS Currency Centre in Rumbek, Lakes State. The visit on 24 September 2025 was aimed at confirming readiness ahead of the facility’s official commissioning.

The delegation included Lakes State Minister of Cabinet Affairs, Hon Stephen Mathiang Deng, who represented Governor Rin Tueny Mabor, and National MP Hon Dr Akol Paul Akordit. Their participation reflected the importance of the project for both state and national institutions.

During the visit, Minister Deng expressed appreciation to President Salva Kiir Mayardit, BoSS leadership, and project partners for ensuring that Rumbek was chosen as a site for such an important facility. He said the decision was a form of recognition to the people of Lakes State, who played a historic role as a former base for the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM).

“This is a payback to the people of Lakes State who will be the first beneficiaries,” said Deng. “Women, workers, and future generations will benefit from this facility. On behalf of the state government, I assure you of security for this building and for all those who will work here, because they are serving not only Lakes State but the entire country.”

Dr Akol described the project as a direct outcome of the SPLM’s vision of “taking towns to the villages.” He added that the success in Rumbek sets an example that can be replicated in other parts of the country, including Yambio, Nzara, Nasir, Pagak, Nimule, and Aweil. “This is a step in the right direction and it gives us confidence that such facilities can take shape across South Sudan,” he said.

Dr Chan explained that the inspection was conducted by a specialised BoSS team with expertise in banking operations, information technology, infrastructure, electrical systems, and air conditioning. “We wanted to bring the technical team first to assess and prepare the ground for the grand opening, which will be commissioned by the Governor,” he said.

The renovation works were carried out by Dreams Engineering Company. Its CEO, Boum Andrew Makur, thanked both the government and the local community for their support during the project. He stressed that the work was not just about restoring a building, but about contributing to the broader development of the state and the country.

The Rumbek Currency Centre is expected to ease access to financial services for residents and businesses in Lakes State. Previously, many had to travel to Juba to conduct high-level transactions or access currency-related services. The facility will help strengthen financial stability, encourage formal banking use and reduce operational costs for businesses by improving local access.
