(JUBA) – The South Sudan Civil Aviation Authority (SSCAA) has received Phase One of the expanded apron project at Juba International Airport from the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS).

According to the aviation body, the handover marks a significant step in modernising and strengthening South Sudan’s aviation infrastructure.

The multi-phase initiative aims to increase the size, number, and capacity of airport aprons, enabling the airport to handle more aircraft safely and efficiently. The expansion is designed to improve operational capacity, reduce congestion, and support anticipated growth in domestic and international air traffic.

As part of the project, UNMISS is constructing additional aprons and essential culverts, with two culverts already completed. The project, which started in March 2025, has continued despite challenging conditions, including heavy rains, swampy terrain, and difficult soil types. The progress reflects the strong partnership between UNMISS and SSCAA in advancing the country’s aviation sector.

The handover ceremony was attended by a senior SSCAA delegation led by Mr Daffalla Habib Awongo, Director for Corporate Services, along with Eng Kat Mosety Monyjok, General Manager of Juba International Airport, Col Phillip Kuch Manyuon, Aviation Security Manager, and other senior technical and administrative staff. Their presence highlights the Authority’s commitment to aligning all developments with international safety and operational standards.

Officials said the successful completion of Phase One enhances South Sudan’s air transport capabilities, supporting national growth, humanitarian access, and future aviation opportunities. The project is expected to continue in subsequent phases, further expanding airport capacity and infrastructure.
