Hiyala FC emerged victorious in a recent match over Lokoya United FC in the Monyeimiji Football Tournament at the Juba National Stadium. This win marks the fourth triumph for Hiyala FC in the tournament’s history.
The Monyeimiji Football Tournament is an annual competition that features teams primarily from Eastern Equatoria State, with a particular focus on Otuho-speaking communities. This year, 32 teams are participating in the tournament, which is being held in Central Equatoria State.
The atmosphere at the stadium was vibrant and peaceful, with fans celebrating victories through traditional dances. The tournament is renowned for promoting unity and social cohesion among different communities.
Sponsor Joseph Gama emphasised the tournament’s role in fostering peace in Eastern Equatoria and throughout South Sudan. He expressed a desire to expand the tournament to include other tribes, such as the Madi, Acholi, and Pari-Lopon, to further demonstrate the spirit of Eastern Equatoria.
Responding to rumours of tensions between Ifotu FC and Hiyala FC, tournament Chairperson David Okimo stressed the importance of promoting peace and unity. He congratulated all participating teams and encouraged continued unity, love, and friendship among players and fans.
Minister of Environment and Forestry Josephine Napon Cosmos, representing the South Sudan government, highlighted the significance of football in uniting youth and communities. She conveyed President Salva Kiir Mayardit’s support for the tournament and called upon the South Sudan Football Federation to prioritize talent and fairness in the selection of players for national teams.
