(JUBA CITY) – Honorable Atong Kuol Manyang, National Minister of Trade and Industry, received His Excellency Lt. Gen. Ambassador Isam Mohammed Hassan Karrar and his delegation at her office in Juba on 24th September 2025.

The discussions focused on strengthening trade relations and economic cooperation between South Sudan and Sudan. Ambassador Karrar highlighted the strategic importance of the partnership between the two neighbouring nations, noting that both countries benefit from close economic ties.

He acknowledged that the ongoing conflict in Sudan has affected the economic growth of both countries. He emphasised that Sudan is ready to restore trade with South Sudan to previous levels and is open to reviewing the existing trade Memorandum of Understanding between their ministries. The ambassador also extended an official invitation for Minister Atong to visit Sudan.

Minister Atong thanked the ambassador and his delegation for the visit. She said she welcomed discussions on boosting bilateral trade, particularly in imports and exports. She highlighted the importance of peace along the borders to facilitate trade, which she said would help reduce consumer prices, especially for goods transported through Port Sudan.

The Minister confirmed her commitment to reviewing previous agreements and said she planned to visit Sudan soon. She also acknowledged the role of Sudanese businesspeople in supporting South Sudan’s economic growth. She mentioned that the recent National Trade Forum, organised by her ministry, addressed challenges facing the business community, including Sudanese traders who were invited to participate.

 On the same day, Minister Atong received a courtesy call from Dr. Mach Martin Majier Gai, the former Mayor of Bor Municipality Council. According to the Ministry’s Press Unit, the visit aimed to discuss local business and trade issues in Bor and opportunities for collaboration with national trade initiatives.
