(JUBA) – A senior officer in the South Sudan National Police Service, Major General Dr Stephen Warkozi, is recovering from gunshot injuries following an armed attack on his home in Gudele 2, Juba, on Sunday night. His daughter and brother were also injured in the incident, which police believe was a deliberate act by unknown assailants.

According to Police Spokesperson Major General James Monday, the attack took place at around 8:00 p.m. when armed men stormed General Warkozi’s residence, opened fire and fled the scene immediately.

“Dr Stephen Warkozi was injured on his left leg, while his daughter and brother also sustained injuries,” General Monday told reporters on Tuesday.

The victims were rushed to hospital, where they are currently receiving medical treatment. Hospital sources confirmed that their condition is stable. On Monday, the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and senior officers visited the injured officer and his family to offer support.

A criminal investigation has been opened at the Gudele Police Division. While police have launched a manhunt, no arrests had been made by Tuesday. Major General Monday declined to speculate on the motive behind the attack, stating that sharing information at this stage could jeopardise the investigation.

“We don’t want to reveal the steps we are taking because it could help the perpetrators,” he explained.

The police spokesperson assured the public that further details will be released once the investigation progresses and stressed the importance of public cooperation.

“We urge all citizens to report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station to help prevent further criminal acts,” he said.

General Warkozi is widely respected not only in his official capacity as Director of Research and Transformation in the police service but also as an academic and religious leader. He has held several public service positions, including in civil aviation oversight. He has also lectured at the University of Juba and the Police College, and is a senior figure in the Amadi Internal Province Church.

This incident comes at a time when the South Sudan Police Service is stepping up its operations against organised crime and aiming to strengthen public trust, particularly in urban areas like Juba.

No monetary loss was reported in the attack, and no ransom demands or threats were received before the incident. Authorities have reiterated their commitment to protecting all citizens and called on the public to remain calm but alert.
