(JUBA) – The Embassy of the Republic of South Sudan in Nairobi hosted a courtesy meeting with a delegation from the Kenya–South Sudan Liaison Office (KESSULO) on 13 August 2025.
The delegation led by Maj. Abel Rotich met with H.E. Ambassador Anthony Kon to discuss ways to strengthen bilateral relations and support South Sudan’s development and capacity building.
KESSULO, operating under the Executive Office of the President of Kenya, outlined areas of cooperation including governance and training programmes, scholarship opportunities for South Sudanese students, facilitation of long term visas and support for South Sudanese nationals living in Kenya.
The delegation also presented plans for a one year wildlife programme, highlighting opportunities to integrate South Sudan’s wildlife sector into regional tourism initiatives.
Trade and investment were a major focus during the discussions. Areas highlighted included fisheries, agriculture and mineral resources.
Ambassador Kon raised concerns over high shipping costs, elevated bond rates and difficulties in returning empty containers, which he said contribute to trade imbalances. He requested Kenya’s support to create a more favourable environment for South Sudanese traders and investors.
The meeting also touched on constitutional and governance matters. KESSULO confirmed its readiness to deploy an expert to Juba to support the National Constitutional Review Commission. Additionally, the strategic importance of the LAPSSET Corridor was emphasised as a key avenue for enterprise and economic growth benefiting both South Sudan and Kenya.
Kon expressed appreciation for Kenya’s ongoing support and reaffirmed South Sudan’s commitment to deepening bilateral relations, expanding trade and investment, and enhancing cooperation in governance, tourism and peacebuilding.
The Embassy pledged to continue working closely with KESSULO and other partners to ensure the growth of South Sudan–Kenya relations for the benefit of both nations.
