(NIMULE, MAGWI COUNTY) – The South Sudan Revenue Authority, together with UNOPS, TradeMark Africa and the EU Global Gateway, has launched a major upgrade of the Nimule One Stop Border Post, a project expected to transform the country’s busiest trade entry point and improve the movement of goods between South Sudan and Uganda.
The launch took place on 27 November 2025 and introduced a programme designed to expand infrastructure, improve trade processes and strengthen the protection of goods entering the country. Officials say the investment will support regional integration and bring safer and more efficient services at the border.
The project will build climate resilient facilities, introduce a Women and Youth Market, and modernise customs systems to reduce delays in clearance. It will also establish sanitary and phytosanitary services and quality inspection units aimed at improving standards of imported products. These additions are expected to reduce risks linked to harmful or low quality goods entering the country.
Deputy Commissioner General John Mading Bol said the upgrade will improve economic activity and support trade along the South Sudan and Uganda corridor. He said the new systems will help ease movement at the border and strengthen national revenue.
Nimule Mayor Caesar Longei Pholi voiced full local support for the initiative. He said the community considers Nimule a stable and peaceful town and is ready to cooperate fully in the implementation of the project.
TradeMark Africa’s Country Director for Uganda and South Sudan, Anna Nambooze, said the upgrade will contribute to wider African trade goals. She said South Sudan, as a young nation with growing trade potential, will benefit from improved systems and better border checks. She also noted plans for a border laboratory to screen goods coming into the country.
In closing remarks, Deputy Commissioner General Mading Bol said the project will help improve the quality of goods entering the market and strengthen customs procedures. He said Nimule, which handles most of South Sudan’s imports, remains a vital point for the country’s economy and needs facilities that match the scale of its traffic.
Officials say the initiative marks an important step towards safer, faster and more inclusive trade along one of South Sudan’s most important economic routes.
