(JUBA) – The former Commissioner General of the South Sudan Revenue Authority (SSRA), Simon Akuei Deng, has called on staff and lobbyists to refrain from early political manoeuvring while welcoming the new NRA Commissioner General, William Anyuon Kuol.

Speaking during the reception ceremony on Thursday, Akuei urged employees to give the new commissioner time to perform his duties. “Please give the Commissioner General a chance to work. Don’t start lobbying within one month,” he said.

He emphasised that early internal campaigns and demands distract leadership from implementing reforms. “It is concerning that as soon as people are appointed, some start thinking of becoming Commissioner-General. This country needs service. Instead of defending their seat, they should allow him to serve everyone,” Akuei added.

Akuei also criticised the circulation of unverified allegations on social media, which he said harm institutional credibility. “It does not reflect well that soon after appointment, rumours circulate about billions that never existed in this institution,” he stated.

At the event, the former revenue chief announced plans for a major infrastructure project at the Nimule border post. In partnership with the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS), the NRA will launch a €10–12 million ($10.7–12.3 million) one stop border post in January 2026.

Akuei explained that the project aims to modernise South Sudan’s busiest entry point, reduce smuggling, and improve efficiency in cross-border trade. “We have a project with UNOPS for a modern one-stop border post, estimated at 10–12 million euros, to curb smuggling and facilitate trade. Work is set to begin in January,” he said.

Once completed, the project is expected to significantly boost revenue collection and strengthen trade operations along the border.
