(DUK COUNTY) – A money transfer agency in Duk County, Jonglei State, was robbed on Thursday night by an armed group suspected to belong to the Red Belt militia, local officials said. The attackers stole cash and disarmed a police officer guarding the premises.
John Chatim, the Commissioner of Duk County, confirmed the incident to Jakony.com on Friday. He said the robbers took over 45,000,000 South Sudanese Pounds (approximately $6,340) and nearly $1,800 in US currency. The police officer on duty was disarmed, and an AK-47 rifle was seized by the assailants.
Commissioner Chatim added that the investigation is ongoing, but no arrests have been made. Authorities are working with available security forces to track down the suspects.
The Red Belt group was recently classified by Jonglei authorities as a criminal organisation. The group has been linked to multiple incidents this year, including clashes with the National Security Service (NSS) in Bor and an ambush on a national minister.
In a video circulated on social media, the group’s leader, Leek Mamer Leek, denied involvement in rebellion or criminal activity. He said the uniform worn by his group was to distinguish them from rival Murle community members and denied claims of military ranks. Leek described recent clashes with the NSS in Bor as misunderstandings.
Jonglei State continues to face security challenges, including intercommunal violence, cattle raiding, and revenge attacks. The presence of armed groups like the Red Belt complicates law enforcement efforts and threatens local commerce. Security reinforcements, including NSS officers, have recently been deployed to Bor to enhance stability.
