(JUBA) – South Sudan has taken part in global and regional meetings aimed at improving food safety and strengthening consumer protection, with senior officials representing the country in Rome and Juba this week. The National Bureau of Standards said these engagements support national efforts to ensure that only safe and quality products enter the South Sudanese market.

Hon Gloria Nyoka Joseph, Executive Director of the South Sudan National Bureau of Standards, led the country’s delegation to the 48th session of the Codex Alimentarius Commission at the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation headquarters in Rome. She said the meeting offered South Sudan an important chance to take part in international discussions that guide global food safety rules.

She noted that Codex plays a central role in shaping international standards and said representing South Sudan at the session was both an honour and a responsibility. She added that the Bureau’s work is essential in protecting citizens by screening imports and ensuring that products meet safety requirements before they reach the market.

Hon Nyoka said the engagement in Rome helped strengthen links with other countries and organisations committed to safe food systems. She said South Sudan will continue to build on these contacts as it improves its national inspection and quality control systems.

In related developments, the National Bureau of Standards hosted the East African Community Standards Technical Committee on Food Hygiene and Safety Management in Juba. The meeting, held at Palm Africa Hotel, brought together experts from across the region to discuss ways of improving cooperation and aligning standards.

The Bureau said the meeting was part of wider efforts to support regional harmonisation, reduce risks linked to unsafe food and build confidence in regional trade. Officials said greater cooperation among East African states will help create safer markets, promote health and support business growth.

Representatives from member countries, technical experts and local officials took part in the discussions. The Bureau said hosting the meeting showed South Sudan’s growing role in regional food safety work and its commitment to strengthening consumer protection.
