(JUBA) – South Sudan’s National Police Service has arrested 46 suspected gang members, including six women, following a fresh security operation targeting criminal hotspots in the Gumbo-Sherikat areas of the capital.

The arrests were made during a coordinated anti-gang operation that began at 6:00 PM on 17 July and continued until 4:00 AM on 18 July, according to police authorities. The sweep is part of a broader citywide campaign aimed at reducing gang-related crime in Juba.

Police Spokesperson Major General James Monday Enoka confirmed the operation during an interview, describing the raid as “very successful” and crediting the community for its support in identifying high-risk areas.

“I appreciate the community members who helped the police locate and identify areas where criminal activities were being reported,” Gen. Enoka said.

Among the items recovered were four motorcycles allegedly used during criminal acts, along with household goods such as mattresses, travel bags, and boxes suspected to have been stolen.

Police also seized a pistol, traditional weapons including bows and arrows, and a set of keys believed to have been used to break into shops and private homes. These items are being held as evidence pending court proceedings.

The 46 suspects are currently under investigation and will be brought to court once inquiries are complete, Gen. Enoka confirmed.

He stated that the security operation followed several weeks of intelligence gathering and growing concern from the public about increased criminal activity in the capital, particularly gang violence.

Police efforts have recently intensified following the reported rape of a teenage girl last month, allegedly by gang members, a case that sparked significant public outrage and demands for stronger enforcement.

This latest operation is part of a wider crackdown that has entered its third week, resulting in more than 600 arrests of suspected gang members across Juba, according to police reports.

Gen. Enoka said the recent activities have already led to a noticeable drop in urban crime, and more operations are expected to follow in other areas of the capital in the coming days.

“We are committed to securing the capital,” he stated. “The safety of our people is our top priority, and we will continue working with residents to restore peace and order.”

Below is a summary of the latest operation:

Item Quantity Details
Suspects Arrested 46 Includes 6 women
Motorcycles Seized 4 Used in alleged criminal activity
Stolen Items Recovered Several Mattresses, bags, and household goods
Weapons Confiscated Multiple Pistol, bows, arrows, and break-in tools

Police authorities are urging residents to continue cooperating with law enforcement by reporting suspicious behaviour and supporting efforts to ensure lasting peace in the city.
