(ACCRA) – The Ghana Cedi Sixty Anniversary International Currency Conference has opened in Accra, bringing together delegates from more than forty African central banks and several global financial institutions. The Bank of South Sudan is among the participants taking part in discussions on currency management and wider financial cooperation.

The delegation from the Bank of South Sudan is led by the Second Deputy Governor for Administration and Finance, Hon Rita Nyankiir Akoon. The team is expected to engage with technical experts on issues that affect daily economic activity in South Sudan, including currency circulation, the cost of producing and handling cash, and the growing shift towards digital payments across the continent.

Ghana’s President, John Dramani Mahama, opened the conference by calling for stronger cooperation among African central banks. He said that shared experience and improved systems can help countries reduce operational costs and protect their financial sectors from rising cyber risks. He also noted that the rapid growth of mobile and digital payments demands better coordination between countries.

For South Sudan, the conference offers a chance to learn from more experienced African central banks that have managed currency reforms, strengthened their banking sectors, and improved public confidence in national currencies. Officials say the event is useful for identifying practical ideas that can support the Bank of South Sudan’s work to stabilise the market, manage the circulation of banknotes and coins, and strengthen financial technology systems.

The Bank of South Sudan delegation is also expected to explore opportunities for training, capacity building and partnerships with international currency institutions that attended the meeting.

The conference will continue with panel sessions on monetary policy, secure cash handling, and new currency technologies that are being introduced in different African countries.
