(ACCRA) – The Second Deputy Governor of the Bank of South Sudan, Rita Nyankiir Akoon, is in Accra, Ghana, where she is taking part in the Cedi at 60 International Currency Conference. She is joined by senior officials from the Bank of South Sudan, including the Director General for Financial Markets and Payment Systems, Barac Deng Aguer.

The gathering has brought together representatives from more than forty three central banks across Africa, as well as international experts involved in currency management, financial technology and payment systems. The event marks sixty years of the Ghanaian Cedi and focuses on how African central banks can improve currency handling, strengthen payment systems and support modern financial sectors.

During the opening day, the South Sudan delegation toured the Currency Research Centre, which was set up in 2015 as Ghana’s main facility for cash processing and research. The centre uses modern systems to improve the quality, security and circulation of banknotes. The team received a detailed briefing on how Ghana uses advanced cash handling technologies to support stable and efficient financial services.

Officials say the conference offers useful lessons for South Sudan as the Bank of South Sudan continues to update its currency management operations and strengthen payment systems to support economic stability.
