(JUBA) – Key financial and business leaders have agreed to work together to speed up the adoption of digital payments in South Sudan, saying it will reduce costs and make trade more efficient.
The Bank of South Sudan hosted a meeting on 26 September 2025 with the National Chamber of Commerce and other stakeholders to discuss ways to increase the use of online and electronic payments across the market.
Central Bank Governor Dr Addis Ababa Othow said digital systems are now essential for modern trade. He said electronic payments can help businesses manage cash flow better, reduce delays and make financial services available to more people.
National Chamber of Commerce Chairman Ladu Lukak said traders must be ready to change. He said he will hold meetings with business owners across Juba and other towns to encourage them to accept electronic payments as a recognised means of transaction.
Bankers Association Chief Executive Betty Angasi said commercial banks are ready to work with traders and mobile operators to support the transition. She called for a joint awareness campaign to educate the public, saying that every shop should have access to a digital payment option to make buying and selling easier.
The session was also attended by First Deputy Governor of the Central Bank Samuel Yanga and other private sector representatives.
Businesses in South Sudan continue to rely heavily on cash. Supporters of digital payments say wider adoption could cut security risks, make record keeping easier and attract new investors into the market.
