(TORIT COUNTY) – A United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) peacekeeping unit from Bangladesh has cleared a major road obstruction on the Torit–Liria supply route, restoring a key lifeline for trade and humanitarian assistance in Eastern Equatoria State.
According to UNMISS, two commercial trucks had become stranded on the road, causing a serious blockage that disrupted the flow of goods and essential services. The obstruction had raised concerns for communities that depend on the supply route for food, medicine, and fuel.
The Torit – Liria road is a vital corridor for local traders, transporters and humanitarian agencies. It provides access for both commercial activities and relief operations to remote and vulnerable communities. Any interruption in its use has immediate effects on the availability of essential goods in local markets, as well as on the timely delivery of humanitarian support.
Peacekeepers responded using specialised equipment to move the stranded trucks and clear the road. Within hours, the route was reopened, allowing traffic to resume. The reopening is expected to ease shortages in Torit County and surrounding areas, where rising transport costs and road closures have often worsened economic difficulties.
For many residents in Eastern Equatoria, particularly those living in rural areas, the road is their only access to critical services. Traders say the blockage had already begun to affect supplies, while humanitarian agencies reported delays in delivering food rations and medical items. With the road now cleared, both commercial and aid deliveries are expected to return to normal.
South Sudan continues to face challenges with road infrastructure, particularly during the rainy season, when heavy rains often damage roads and leave vehicles stranded.
The support from UNMISS peacekeepers has enabled the movement of goods and services crucial to livelihoods.
Eastern Equatoria communitie are already struggling with high inflation, limited employment opportunities and recurring shortages of basic commodities. Ensuring reliable transport routes remains critical for stabilising both trade and humanitarian access.
