(BRUSSELS, BELGIUM) – NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has warned Moscow that the Alliance is ready to do what it takes to protect Europe, amid renewed commitments of military and economic support to Ukraine. His message followed a joint pledge by Poland, Germany, and Norway to provide Ukraine with 500 million US Dollars in additional military assistance as the country prepares for another harsh winter on the front line.

The half billion US Dollar package will support Ukraine through a European initiative that funds the purchase of United States weapons for delivery to Kyiv. European leaders say the move is aimed at strengthening Ukraine’s defence at a time when Russian forces claim progress on the battlefield, including a disputed claim of taking the eastern city of Pokrovsk.

Ukraine’s supporters say more is required, with some urging hesitant NATO members to contribute further towards defence spending targets set by the former United States president Donald Trump during his time in office. Those goals include allocating 3.5 percent of national GDP on defence. Some European countries are turning to Ukraine’s support programmes to meet spending requirements more easily.

Despite the increased support, there are concerns about Washington’s reliability. United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio did not attend the high level meeting of NATO ministers in Brussels. Meanwhile, US envoy Steve Witkoff returned from Russia without progress in discussions over ending the war that the Russian dictator Vladimir Putin continues to wage against Ukraine.

European officials say the future of Ukraine remains tied to decisions made in Washington, Moscow, and Kyiv rather than Brussels alone. With no agreement reached in Moscow, Ukraine faces a fourth winter under full scale attack.

In parallel, the European Commission has intensified pressure on Belgium to release frozen Russian state assets that are held at a major clearing institution in Brussels. The funds could secure a large financial loan to maintain Ukraine’s economy through 2026, as estimated by the International Monetary Fund. Belgian leaders have objected, describing the proposal as carrying high legal and financial risk. However, EU officials insist that most Belgian concerns have been addressed and that European unity is necessary to prevent economic collapse in Ukraine.

Key figures discussed:

Item Estimated Amount US Dollar Equivalent*
Military package for Ukraine 500 million USD 500 million USD
Ukraine financial gap (2026 to 2027) 135 billion Euros Approx. 147 billion USD

EU governments have separately agreed to phase out Russian liquefied natural gas imports by 2026 and pipeline gas by 2027. Leaders hope this will sharply reduce European economic dependence on Moscow, a major component of Russia’s war financing.

Away from the diplomatic discussions, Ukraine’s security services have detained a British military trainer accused of spying for Russia. Authorities say he attempted to pass information about Ukrainian troops and training locations to Russian intelligence agency the FSB. Reports across Europe show Russia continuing to recruit individuals for sabotage, including through online channels.

NATO officials say that Russian sabotage attempts inside the Alliance will draw responses. They warn future attacks on member countries, including Poland, will result in consequences targeted at assets that Russia values.

Elsewhere in Europe, Poland has expanded its aerospace ambitions, committing more than 731 million Euros (about 796 million US Dollars) to the European Space Agency over three years, and moving toward a takeover of Czech airline Smartwings to strengthen regional aviation share. In Finland, schools are educating children about recognising false information, particularly content driven by artificial intelligence, as part of national efforts to counter disinformation.

In Warsaw, the Christmas season has begun with festive city lights and a large illuminated tree in the historic centre, drawing residents and visitors despite the challenging regional environment.

NATO officials and military experts continue to urge European nations to maintain strong and clear support for Kyiv, describing unity as essential in countering Russia’s ongoing aggression.
