(RUMBEK, LAKES STATE) – The Bank of South Sudan (BoSS) has officially opened the Rumbek Currency Centre, a new regional facility designed to improve the country’s financial infrastructure, currency management, and access to financial services outside the capital, Juba.
The centre was inaugurated on 1 November 2025 in a ceremony presided over by the Governor of the Bank of South Sudan, Dr Addis Ababa Othow Akongdit, and attended by the Minister of Finance and Planning, Hon Athian Ding Athian, who represented President Salva Kiir Mayardit as the Guest of Honour. T
he event also brought together Lakes State Governor Gen. Rin Tueny Mabor, members of the National Legislative Assembly, senior officials, representatives from commercial banks, and community leaders.
The new facility is a key milestone in the Bank’s decentralisation and reform strategy, aimed at making financial services more accessible across the country. The Rumbek Currency Centre will handle currency issuance, distribution, and processing, reducing risks and logistical costs associated with transporting cash from Juba to other regions.
Governor Dr Addis described the new facility as a sign of the growing stability and economic progress in South Sudan. He credited the leadership of President Kiir for providing the political support necessary to expand financial infrastructure across the states.
According to the Bank, the Rumbek facility forms part of a larger national plan to establish regional currency centres in key locations such as Wau, Malakal, and Bor. These centres are expected to improve cash flow management, strengthen monetary operations, and support trade and business growth in the states.
Dr Addis added that the Bank remains committed to transparency, accountability, and technological modernisation, noting that expanding access to financial services is vital for boosting private sector confidence and stimulating rural economies.
Lakes State Governor Gen. Rin Tueny Mabor welcomed the development, saying the new centre will make a real difference to local businesses that rely on efficient cash access. He urged cooperation between the private sector and the government to build trust in South Sudan’s financial system.
The Bank expressed gratitude to the national government, development partners, and local authorities for their support in completing the project, which is expected to create jobs and reduce reliance on Juba for currency operations.
The opening of the Rumbek Currency Centre comes at a time when South Sudan is working to stabilise its financial system and rebuild confidence in the national currency amid inflationary pressures.
