(MAGWI COUNTY) – Police in Magwi have launched a fresh crackdown on underage gambling and night entertainment, warning lottery and casino operators against allowing minors to take part in such activities.

The Inspector of Police, Major General Pio Otto Millo Charles, announced that the operation would begin on Friday, September 26, 2025, as schools across South Sudan reopen. The initiative is aimed at protecting children under the age of 18 from betting, casino activities and attending late night shows.

Speaking to Voice of Freedom radio, Major General Millo said the patrols would start on Friday evening and continue on a daily basis. He added that gambling operators would be closely monitored and questioned if found to be admitting minors.

“Children must not be exposed to gambling or betting. It is the responsibility of both parents and business operators to make sure they are protected,” he said. The police chief noted that during school holidays children are largely under the supervision of their parents, but once schools reopen, stricter enforcement is needed to ensure they focus on education.

The move comes at a time when gambling and sports betting have been spreading rapidly in towns across South Sudan, with many young people drawn to lotteries and betting shops. Authorities in Magwi say the growth of betting without strict controls risks social harm and financial exploitation of minors.

Betting shops and casinos are now expected to enforce tighter entry rules, including checks on the ages of their clients. Businesses that fail to comply risk being questioned and penalised.

The Inspector of Police said the operation will run alongside wider community patrols to improve security in Magwi County.
