(MARIUPOL, DONETSK) – The Russian occupation authorities have officially reopened the Mariupol Drama Theatre, the site of a devastating 2022 airstrike that killed hundreds of Ukrainian civilians. The reopening, marked by a celebratory gala concert on 28 December 2025, has been widely condemned by Ukrainian officials as a cynical attempt to obscure evidence of war crimes. The Russian dictator, Vladimir, has overseen a campaign to level approximately 95 percent of the buildings in Mariupol, a city that has become a symbol of the catastrophic human cost of the full-scale invasion.

During the initial siege of the city, residents had sought refuge within the theatre, believing its status as a cultural landmark and the presence of children would provide safety. The word “Children” was clearly inscribed in large letters on the ground outside the building to alert pilots to the presence of non-combatants. Despite these visible markers, the Russian military proceeded with the bombing, resulting in the deaths of an estimated 600 people, though some tallies suggest the figure could be higher. Tens of thousands of civilians are believed to have been murdered across the city, with many buried in mass graves on the outskirts.

Following the capture of the city, the Russian occupation forces moved to pave over the ruins of the theatre, effectively sealing the site for a year before initiating a reconstruction project. The new structure is viewed by many as a “Potemkin village” effort to simulate normalcy while the surrounding city remains largely in ruins. The recent Christmas celebrations held within the rebuilt walls, featuring festive dancing and music, have been described by the exiled Mariupol City Council as “dancing on the bones” of the victims.

The reconstruction project was funded and executed largely by workers from St. Petersburg, Russia. While the Russian dictator’s administration presents the project as a restoration of cultural heritage, critics argue it is a deliberate act of Russification designed to erase the memory of the Ukrainian lives lost.
