(MOSCOW) – A recent broadcast of the Russian state television programme 60 Minutes revealed internal disputes regarding the geopolitical standing of Iran and the ongoing war in Ukraine. Alexei Naumov, a member of the Russian International Affairs Council, described the current global climate as a period of new sincerity that follows a thirty year sleep after the end of the liberal world order. He suggested that western elites have been exposed for involvement in questionable connections while asserting that the world is now defined by raw power.

Addressing the potential for military strikes against Iran, Naumov argued that every nation is currently facing a test of viability. He criticised the tendency of Iranian leadership to complain about sanctions, noting that such measures are a direct consequence of challenging the United States. According to Naumov, nations must choose between confronting Washington or reaching a compromise through concessions.

Host Olga Skabeeva countered by stating that Iran was never offered a deal but rather a demand for total capitulation. She defended the Iranian resistance, while Naumov likened the situation to Ukraine. Naumov claimed it was inconsistent for Ukraine to strike the Russian shadow fleet or tankers and then express dismay when Russia targets Ukrainian energy infrastructure.

Skabeeva rejected this comparison, asserting that Ukraine is the aggressor while Iran is not. Naumov dismissed the distinction between aggressor and defender, stating that only the presence of strength matters. He noted that while Iranian rhetoric regarding Death to America often precedes US retaliatory strikes on bases, the Islamic Republic under Ali Khamenei must now prove it is unified with its people.

The debate also touched upon the position of Donald Trump, with Skabeeva suggesting the American leader remains hesitant to act due to Iranian threats against US bases. Naumov concluded by warning that multipolarity brings trials that many nations may not survive. He noted that Russia must support the Iranian regime because its survival occupies US military resources, acknowledging that if every weaker power surrendered to the US, Russia might eventually face a similar predicament due to its economic weakness compared to Washington.
