(JUBA) – South Sudan has indicated its willingness to receive additional deportees from the United States, according to reports based on diplomatic communications and sources familiar with the ongoing discussions.

The move was communicated to the administration of US President Donald Trump, with South Sudan reportedly expressing openness to cooperate on immigration enforcement matters. The disclosure was first reported by Politico and later cited by News.az.

As part of the same diplomatic engagement, South Sudan is also reported to have requested the US government to lift sanctions imposed on one of its senior officials. The identity of the sanctioned official was not made public in the report.

The United States government has not yet issued any formal comment on the reported discussions or whether it will consider South Sudan’s request for the removal of sanctions. It is also unclear how many deportees may be returned under any future agreement.

As of July 2025, the US Department of Homeland Security and Immigration and Customs Enforcement continue to carry out deportations of individuals whose asylum claims or visa statuses have been denied. Many of those facing deportation include people who arrived in the US as children or were previously protected under Temporary Protected Status (TPS) or Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA).

At the same time, rights groups have raised concerns about the welfare of deportees returning to fragile and insecure environments, especially those without local family support or who have lived most of their lives outside South Sudan. The country continues to face significant challenges, including food insecurity, political instability, and economic hardship.
