(VOVCHANSK, KHARKIV REGION) – Ukrainian aviation successfully destroyed a Russian drone control centre and communications hub in Vovchansk, further complicating Moscow’s efforts to dominate the city. The operation, confirmed through a video shared on the Sonyashnyk Telegram channel affiliated with Ukrainian aviation, highlights Kyiv’s continued precision strikes against Russian military infrastructure.
The attack employed a GBU-62 bomb equipped with a JDAM-ER kit, adapted by Ukraine for use on Soviet-era MiG-29 fighters. The 500-pound munition, originally a conventional Mk-82 bomb, was upgraded with GPS guidance and an extended-range airframe module. Once released, the ER module deploys wings, allowing the bomb to glide tens of kilometres to its target. This permits precision strikes from a safe distance, especially in heavily defended areas or when aircraft cannot approach closely.
The Russian drone control centre was located in a building adjacent to the railroad tracks, making it a key node for enemy surveillance and communications. The strike was coordinated with a reconnaissance drone operating over Vovchansk, ensuring accurate targeting.
Ukrainian forces maintained a presence in Vovchansk as of December 2-3, holding the southern outskirts despite Russian claims of having captured the city. Ruslan Mykula, co-founder of DeepState, told Gwara Media that Russian troops were advancing in the forests on the city’s western edge while attempting to bypass Vovchansk from the west and southwest.
The Ukrainian General Staff previously stated that reports from Moscow about the capture of Vovchansk in the Kharkiv region were false. The city remains an active conflict zone with Ukrainian troops firmly holding positions.
On December 2, soldiers of the 57th Motorized Infantry Brigade named after Kosty Hordiienko eliminated Russian forces attempting to raise the Kremlin flag in the city. The brigade continues to defend Vovchansk on its 572nd day of continuous resistance. Russian forces persist with artillery, aviation, and drone attacks, including fibre-optic UAVs.
