(KOSTIANTYNIVKA DIRECTION, DONETSK REGION, UKRAINE) – A Ukrainian ground robotic system from the Alter Ego battalion of the 93rd Separate Mechanised Brigade Kholodnyi Yar successfully neutralised enemy surveillance drones and later became an unexpected witness to the evacuation of severely wounded Ukrainian soldiers, according to information released by the brigade.
While returning from a mission on the Kostiantynivka axis, the robotic complex encountered an enemy drone known among Ukrainian troops as a “zhdun”, a loitering drone designed to wait before striking a target. The Ukrainian ground robot manoeuvred around the drone and is believed to have damaged its fibre optic control cable with its tracked movement. As a result, the drone was unable to carry out an attack.
A short time later, the robotic system met another drone of the same type along its route. The operator repeated the same manoeuvre, again damaging the optical control link and preventing a strike.
As the robot continued forward, it observed an explosion ahead on the road. Moving towards the site, the system detected two Ukrainian soldiers who had been seriously wounded and were lying on the roadway. The robot stopped next to them, allowing its operator to assess the situation remotely. The operator confirmed that both soldiers were alive and noted that the ground drone could potentially assist either by transporting the wounded or by transmitting precise location data to rescue teams.
Soon afterwards, an evacuation team arrived on a quad bike. The wounded soldiers were carefully placed into a transport basket and rapidly evacuated from the area to receive medical treatment.
The incident has revealed the expanding role of Ukrainian ground robotics not only in combat tasks but also in reconnaissance and support functions on the battlefield, as Ukraine continues to adapt its technology driven approach in its defence against Russian forces.
