(KUPYANSK, KHARKIV OBLAST) – Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has appeared in a self recorded video filmed near the front line in the Kupyansk sector, directly challenging Russian claims that their forces have taken full control of the area.
The video was released shortly after Valery Gerasimov, Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, announced on November 20 that Russian troops were in complete control of Kupyansk. The claim forms part of a broader pattern of Russian battlefield statements that Ukrainian officials and independent observers have frequently questioned.
In the recording, Zelenskyy said he was visiting Ukrainian soldiers currently fighting in the Kupyansk sector. He praised their efforts and described ongoing combat activity, suggesting that Ukrainian forces remain active and engaged in the area despite Russian assertions.
“The Russians kept talking about Kupyansk, but reality speaks for itself,” Zelenskyy said, according to the official transcript released with the video. He added that he had met troops on the ground and congratulated them for their work, thanking units involved in what he described as the defence of Ukraine.
Zelenskyy also linked battlefield performance to Ukraine’s diplomatic position. He said that success on the front line strengthens Ukraine’s standing in negotiations aimed at ending the war, reflecting Kyiv’s long held position that military resilience underpins its international leverage.
The Kupyansk area has been a focal point of fighting in eastern Ukraine, with control shifting at various stages since Russia launched its full scale invasion. The city is strategically important due to its transport links and proximity to supply routes in the Kharkiv region.
Russian military statements regarding territorial control are often issued without independent verification. Ukraine has consistently accused Moscow of exaggerating or misrepresenting battlefield developments for domestic and international audiences.
No independent confirmation was immediately available regarding the precise situation on the ground in Kupyansk. However, Zelenskyy’s presence near the front line was presented by Ukrainian officials as evidence that the area remains contested and that Ukrainian forces continue to operate there.
