(KYIV, UKRAINE) – Volunteer groups in Ukraine have commenced a technical operation to salvage and restore engines from downed Russian Shahed drones for integration into the Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicle fleet. The Zampotech Charitable Foundation is spearheading this initiative to repurpose captured technology.

According to representatives from the foundation, the restoration process for a single engine typically requires approximately fourteen days and necessitates the use of components from multiple donor units to ensure operational viability. The foundation noted that every recovered part is significant in their efforts to ensure enemy technology is redirected to serve Ukrainian interests.

The organisation currently handles dozens of these power plants which are systematically refurbished before being installed onto domestically produced Ukrainian drones. The Shahed loitering munitions utilise the Chinese manufactured MD550 engine.

On the current market, these engines are valued between 508,414 Ukrainian Hryvnia and 720,253 Ukrainian Hryvnia, which is equivalent to approximately 12,000 US Dollars to 17,000 US Dollars. The MD550 is a horizontally opposed four cylinder air cooled two stroke engine. This engineering effort represents a strategic method of mitigating hardware costs while utilizing available battlefield resources during the ongoing invasion directed by the Russian dictator.
