(KYIV) – European Union leaders have congratulated Péter Magyar, head of Hungary’s Tisza party, on his victory in the country’s parliamentary elections, signalling support for closer cooperation and renewed alignment within the bloc.
French President Emmanuel Macron welcomed what he described as a victory for democracy and Hungary’s commitment to Europe. Writing on social media platform X, he called for joint efforts towards a more sovereign Europe focused on security, competitiveness and democratic values.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz also congratulated Magyar on his election success, noting that Hungarian voters had made a clear decision. He said he looked forward to working together and called for strengthened cooperation to ensure a secure and united Europe.
Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda described the result as a significant victory for Hungary, adding that there were opportunities to advance democracy, justice and peace through joint action.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the outcome indicated that Hungary was returning to its European path.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also congratulated Magyar on his victory.
