Orban Vows Political Fight After Landslide Defeat in Hungary

(BUDAPEST, HUNGARY) – Viktor Orban, the defeated Hungarian prime minister, has vowed to continue his political fight despite losing a landslide election to pro European challenger Peter Magyar, raising the prospect of a future comeback attempt.

Orban, who served as prime minister for 16 years, posted on social media after his defeat:

“The work begins now. We will regroup and continue fighting for the Hungarian people.” His political party retained approximately 50 seats in parliament, making him the minority leader rather than a retired figure.

Political analysts noted that Orban, aged 62, could conceivably attempt to return to power in four years. However, Magyar’s new party has secured a constitutional supermajority and plans to amend the constitution to prevent Orban from running again. The proposed amendment would limit prime ministers to two four year terms, a total of eight years, which would render Orban ineligible for a future bid.

Magyar intends to term limit himself as prime minister under the same constitutional change.

The election result represented a rejection of both Russian influence and the political network associated with United States president Donald Trump, according to commentators covering the vote. Full force of Russian support and MAGA aligned political operatives had been behind Orban’s re election campaign, but Hungarian voters saw through the interference and chose closer alignment with the European Union.

Orban’s political future now depends on the scope of corruption investigations expected to be launched by the incoming government. Analysts suggest Orban will face a choice between arrest or fleeing to Russia if the investigations proceed.

The incoming administration also plans to break up media conglomerates, end gerrymandered electoral districts, and remove judges appointed under Orban’s tenure.

Video footage of the election night celebrations in Budapest showed what one commentator described as inspiring scenes, with Hungarians celebrating what they saw as a rejection of Russian and MAGA aligned interference.
