Fire Damage Assessment from Tuapse Oil Strikes

(TUAPSE, KRASNODAR KRAI, RUSSIA) – A massive fire at Russia’s Tuapse oil terminal on the Black Sea coastline has been brought under control after burning for more than a week, with satellite analysis revealing that Ukrainian drone strikes destroyed 60 percent of the facility’s total storage capacity.

The terminal, situated on the Black Sea coast between Novorossiysk and Sochi, is a critical component of Russian energy export infrastructure. Recent satellite imagery assessed by open source analysts confirms the extensive scale of the damage inflicted upon the sprawling refinery and storage complex.

According to analysis from Okugora Telegram Channel, 24 storage tanks, amounting to 52 percent of the total number of tanks at the site, were completely destroyed. A further four tanks sustained damage, while 18 tanks appear undamaged, though their operational status could not be confirmed with certainty. The cumulative effect of the strikes eliminated 60 percent of the terminal’s oil export capacity.

The environmental impact of the sustained blaze has been severe. Reports from the region describe oil droplets raining over areas of the Caucasus, generating what residents termed black rain. Photographs and video footage shared online captured the extent of the pollution. A river running through the city of Tuapse, which passes near the terminal complex, was filmed covered in a thick layer of oil.

Toxic air and bird deaths have been reported in the aftermath of the strike. Local authorities deployed cleanup crews to affected coastal areas, though the remediation effort appeared rudimentary. Footage verified by open source monitors showed workers using shovels on beaches to manually collect oil deposits washed ashore.

Russian firefighters were photographed posing in front of one of the burning storage canisters before the blaze was finally extinguished, an image that circulated widely on social media platforms.

The strike on Tuapse represents a significant operational success for Ukraine’s deep strike drone campaign, which has consistently targeted Russian energy infrastructure used to fund the war effort.
