Kremlin Confronts Unusual Source of Criticism

(MOSCOW) – A video message by Russian influencer Victoria Bonya has triggered an unusual political reaction inside Russia.

In an 18 minute address published on 14 April, Bonya said that many Russians were afraid to speak openly but insisted she was not. She listed several problems which she said officials had failed to address, including flooding in Dagestan, environmental damage near Anapa linked to fuel oil pollution, regulations allowing the killing of protected animals, livestock seizures in the Novosibirsk region and restrictions on internet access.

The video quickly gained traction online. It drew attention in part because Bonya had not previously engaged in political commentary, focusing instead on lifestyle and entertainment content. Her decision to raise public concerns marked a departure from her usual material.

The recording also highlighted the effects of internet restrictions during emergencies. Bonya cited the flooding in Dagestan as an example, stating that residents struggled to contact emergency services and relatives due to limited connectivity.

The Kremlin responded through spokesman Dmitry Peskov, who said authorities were working to address the issues raised. The reaction extended to political figures and state aligned commentators, some of whom referenced the video in public statements.

The head of the Russian Communist Party, Gennady Zyuganov, drew comparisons between Bonya and historical political figures, suggesting her message reflected wider public sentiment. The comparison, widely noted in Russian media, underlined the level of attention the video received.

The situation has also exposed divisions within pro Kremlin media. State television commentators criticised bloggers and online personalities, many of whom had previously supported official narratives about the war. The shift suggests weakening cohesion within the information space.

Separately, criticism directed at Bonya by prominent propagandists led to further escalation. The influencer indicated she would pursue legal action following negative commentary, prompting additional debate online. Her position has drawn support from segments of the public, particularly among women, who view her as challenging entrenched attitudes.
