(TUAPSE, KRASNODAR KRAI) – Russian energy infrastructure is continuing to suffer significant damage following a series of Ukrainian drone strikes on the strategic port of Tuapse. Recent footage confirms that the facility is burning heavily after being targeted repeatedly over several days. This latest engagement follows a prior attack two weeks ago, suggesting that the Russian dictator has been unable to provide adequate protection for the site despite its known vulnerability.
The success of these strikes indicates that Russian air defences are either critically overstretched or technically incapable of intercepting the drones. This failure persists even as Ukraine increasingly targets various Russian ports every few nights. The consequences of the strikes extend beyond the disruption of fuel exports, as the city of Tuapse itself is now facing an environmental crisis. Local reports on social media and Telegram describe toxic clouds and black oily residues coating homes, vehicles and livestock following contaminated rainfall.
A statement circulated by Russian residents claims the city of Tuapse no longer exists in a functional state due to the level of destruction. The local land, water and air are reportedly poisoned, with black rain falling in a manner compared to the aftermath of Hiroshima. This pollution is reportedly killing local vegetation, insects and birds. Authorities have ordered residents in the city and surrounding areas to remain indoors with all windows sealed.
An oil slick extending up to seven kilometres into the sea has been reported, leading to claims that the harbour and coastline are ecologically dead. The situation has prompted local comparisons to the Chornobyl disaster, noting the irony of previous Kremlin propaganda directed at Kyiv. While Russian state messaging continues to claim that the invasion is proceeding successfully on all fronts, the reality in Krasnodar Krai suggests otherwise.
Satellite imagery shared by analyst Mark Krutov confirms a smoke plume extending 300 kilometres, which is visible from Stavropol. Further images show that while no ships appear to be on fire, the connecting pipelines used to transport oil to container ships have been severely damaged, leading to significant leaks. Tuapse remains a primary export hub alongside Novorossiysk, which has also been subject to frequent attacks. Unlike the previous year’s focus on refineries, the current Ukrainian strategy appears to be a systematic effort to bring Russian oil exports to a standstill.
