(BLACK SEA REGION) – Ukrainian unmanned systems units have launched a new operational approach using sea based unmanned surface platforms equipped with interceptor drones to counter Russian aerial threats, according to material released on 20 April.
The initiative involves deploying unmanned surface vessels as mobile launch platforms for interceptor drones designed to target Shahed type drones and other airborne threats before they reach Ukrainian territory.
Ukrainian sources reported that between 1 and 19 April, ground based interceptor crews from the Unmanned Systems Forces destroyed 4,465 enemy aerial targets. These included reconnaissance drones, loitering munitions, reusable strike drones, and other airborne systems. Among them were 671 Shahed and Gerbera type drones.
The new maritime deployment aims to extend interception capabilities by engaging incoming targets earlier and at greater distance. The programme is intended to improve response times and reduce the burden on land based air defence systems.
Initial interceptions using the sea based platforms have already been carried out by a division of unmanned surface systems within the 412th Brigade of the Unmanned Systems Forces, known as “Nemesis”. A similar newly formed division is being deployed within the 414th Brigade.
Ukrainian officials indicated that the expansion of interceptor operations into maritime domains is expected to strengthen overall air defence coverage. They expressed confidence that the approach will contribute to reducing the number of successful enemy aerial strikes.
Operational footage and details were released by Ukrainian unmanned systems units, including formations within the 412th and 414th Brigades of the Unmanned Systems Forces, with activity linked to operations in the Black Sea area.
