Ukrainian Intelligence Reports Severe Illness of Chechen Leader Kadyrov
(CHECHNYA, RUSSIA) – Ukrainian intelligence officials have reported that Ramzan Kadyrov, the long serving leader of Russia’s Chechen region, is suffering from serious kidney failure and is in poor health, according to statements circulated by Ukrainian sources.
The assessment says Kadyrov’s kidneys are no longer functioning properly and that his condition has worsened over time. Ukrainian officials describe the illness as long standing rather than sudden, suggesting that his health problems have been evident for several years.
Kadyrov has largely withdrawn from public life over the past two years. While he has occasionally appeared in short videos released through official channels or social media, observers note that these appearances are brief and carefully managed. Analysts say this reduced visibility has fuelled speculation about his physical condition.
Ukrainian sources also point to periods when Kadyrov was absent from Chechnya for medical reasons, including reported travel abroad for treatment. These accounts have not been independently verified, and Russian authorities have not issued detailed or transparent medical updates about his health.
The Chechen leader has played a central role in enforcing Kremlin control over Chechnya through a heavily armed security apparatus loyal to him personally and to the Russian dictator Vladimir Putin. His forces have been used by Moscow in internal security operations and in Russia’s war against Ukraine.
Political analysts say that a serious decline in Kadyrov’s health could have implications for stability in Chechnya, a region with a history of violent conflict and repression.
