(ABU DHABI) – Diplomatic efforts to resolve the ongoing conflict in Ukraine have entered a complex phase as delegations from Ukraine, the United States, and Russia concluded two days of discussions in the United Arab Emirates. Whilst US special envoy Steve Wikov described the talks as constructive, significant deadlock remains regarding territorial integrity. The political subgroup has reportedly made no progress as the Kremlin demands control over regions in Donetsk Oblast that it does not currently occupy. However, a military subgroup has found common ground on defining the technical parameters of a potential ceasefire, with written definitions expected next week.

The diplomatic friction coincides with a series of significant military failures within the Russian Federation. In Krasnodar Krai, a Russian air defence missile intended to intercept a drone malfunctioned and struck a residential high rise building, causing a massive fire. A similar incident occurred in Belgorod where a Russian aerial bomb was accidentally released, creating a substantial crater and forcing the evacuation of approximately 2,000 residents. Data indicates that the Russian military dropped 143 of its own bombs on its own or occupied territory in the last year, a slight decrease from the 165 incidents recorded in 2024.

In a rare legal admission, a Russian court has acknowledged the sinking of the missile cruiser Moskva, which occurred on 14 April 2022 near Snake Island. This contradicts previous claims by the Russian Ministry of Defence that the flagship was lost to an internal fire. Ukrainian Neptune anti ship missiles are credited with the strike, which resulted in the loss of nearly 450 crew members. On the modern battlefield, the Russian dictator has shifted tactics toward small infantry groups after abandoning larger mechanised assaults. These groups have suffered heavy casualties, with current Russian losses estimated at 35,000 personnel killed per month, a figure that dwarfs the Soviet Union’s total losses during the decade long Afghan war.

Faced with a lack of progress on the 3,000 kilometre front line, Moscow has intensified a campaign of terror against Ukrainian civilians. Recent strikes involved over 370 drones and 21 missiles, including the first recorded use of “zombie missiles” i.e.obsolete M48U training hardware converted into surface to surface weapons. Despite the psychological pressure and temperatures plunging to 5 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 15 degrees Celsius), Ukrainian resilience remains high. In Kyiv, emergency divers spent six days in freezing water to repair heating infrastructure damaged by shelling, while 41 mobile kitchens provide hot meals to those affected by power outages.

During the World Economic Forum in Davos, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed frustration at the slow pace of European defense integration. He noted that the Russian dictator remains free and continues to legally contest the seizure of frozen assets. Zelenskyy urged Europe to move beyond rhetoric and establish a united armed force, offering Ukraine’s unique technical expertise in drone warfare and Arctic security as a contribution to collective safety. Meanwhile, the prospect of further economic pressure remains, with suggestions that the White House may target the Russian shadow fleet to further isolate an economy currently financing a budget largely dedicated to the war effort.
