(JUBA) – The South Sudan Civil Aviation Authority (SSCAA) has graduated 60 airport security officers after completing a five day intensive training programme at Juba International Airport.

The training, led by SSCAA Director General John Woja Elinana, was designed to strengthen aviation security, improve safety standards, and align South Sudan’s civil aviation operations with international best practices.

At the graduation ceremony, senior officials reminded the new officers that their duties demand high discipline, integrity and professionalism. The Security Manager of the SSCAA said the role was not just a routine assignment but required focus and an uncompromising commitment to safety.

Deputy Manager of Juba International Airport, Engineer Gat Moety, emphasised that airport security is essential for the smooth running of daily operations and for the safety of passengers. Director of Air Transport and Economic Regulations, Teshsin Okongo James, added that the officers’ mission is vital in protecting the airport against emerging threats.

The Director of Aviation Safety and Security Regulations, Captain Paduol Wel Ater, warned the graduates against engaging in illegal activities, stressing that they now represent the authority and must uphold its reputation.

Director General John Woja Elinana noted that safety and security remain the top priorities for South Sudan’s aviation sector. He said with continued government support, the new team will safeguard aircraft, passengers and airport facilities, adding that the country is aiming to move its aviation sector to higher levels of innovation and professionalism.

Board Chairperson Michael Lopuke Lotyam described the training as a step in transforming Juba International Airport into a facility that meets international standards. He stressed that progress in aviation begins with strong management and skilled personnel.

The training programme covered key aspects of aviation security, including passenger and baggage screening, control of vehicles and personnel accessing the airport, patrolling restricted areas, and maintaining professional ethics. It was conducted in accordance with the International Civil Aviation Organization’s Annex 17 and the National Civil Aviation Security Programme.

Graduates were issued official uniforms to standardise their role and authority. The programme also emphasised teamwork, discipline and professionalism as guiding values.

Officials including the SSCAA Public Relations and Communications Manager, David Lopuke, and Training Programme Manager, Meet Chol Malith, congratulated the graduates and encouraged them to maintain transparency, accountability and technical excellence.

Colonel Phillip Kuch Maryuon, representing the Aviation Security Department, reaffirmed the country’s commitment to protecting South Sudan’s airports from threats.
