(JUBA) – The body of the late Abraham Mabor Mathiang, former Deputy Director of the Bank of South Sudan’s Yei Branch, was laid to rest in Aluakluak on Wednesday following an official send off ceremony in Juba and a multi stage journey to his hometown in Lakes State.

On Tuesday, Bank of South Sudan First Deputy Governor Samuel Yanga Mikaya, alongside senior bank officials, staff and family members, gathered at Juba International Airport to bid farewell to their late colleague. The body was then transported by air to Yirol, from where it continued by road to Aluakluak for burial.

Thousands of mourners attended the funeral ceremony, including South Sudan’s Deputy Minister of Finance and Planning, Beec George, as well as Lakes State government officials, extended family members and local residents. The large turnout reflected the late banker’s influence and wide respect across the financial and civic sectors.

Abraham Mabor Mathiang was born on 20 June 1982 and passed away on 15 July 2025 at the age of 43. He had served in various roles within the country’s financial system, notably in the central bank’s Yei Branch, where he played a role in strengthening institutional structures during a period of significant national transition.

His contributions were widely recognised by colleagues as instrumental in enhancing local financial oversight and supporting the rollout of national monetary policy at subnational level.

The solemn funeral in Aluakluak was marked by speeches, prayers and traditional rites. Speakers from the banking sector, the Ministry of Finance and local leadership paid tribute to Mathiang’s legacy, describing him as a dedicated public servant who worked with integrity and vision. Community members also remembered him as a humble and respected figure who maintained strong ties with his place of origin.

Although the cause of his death was not officially disclosed, tributes focused on his professional achievements and the enduring value of his service to South Sudan’s financial system.

The Bank of South Sudan did not release an official statement on possible support for the family, but officials noted that his work set an example for younger generations of South Sudanese professionals seeking to serve in national institutions.

The late Abraham Mabor Mathiang is survived by family members who have requested privacy during their time of mourning.
