Juba, UNISFA Explore Security Cooperation in Abyei Region

(JUBA) – South Sudan’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Hon. Ambassador Akuei Bona Malwal, on 17 July 2025 received a courtesy visit from Major General Robert Yaw Affram, the Force Commander and Acting Head of Mission of the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA), along with a high-level delegation from the UN mission.

The meeting held in Juba, focused on the latest security developments in Abyei, a disputed area located between Sudan and South Sudan, and other regions where UNISFA is currently deployed. According to officials present, UNISFA provided a detailed briefing on the current situation on the ground, including ongoing peacekeeping operations and collaboration with local authorities.

Major General Affram shared insights on recent efforts by UNISFA to stabilise the area, prevent clashes, and support peaceful coexistence among communities. The mission is mandated by the United Nations Security Council to monitor the demilitarised zone and facilitate dialogue between conflicting parties in the region.

Deputy Minister Akuei Bona Malwal welcomed the update and thanked the UN peacekeeping team for their continued commitment to regional peace and stability. He reiterated the government’s support for the work of UNISFA and emphasised the importance of sustained cooperation between the mission and South Sudanese institutions.

Abyei remains one of the most sensitive areas in post independence relations between South Sudan and Sudan. Although claimed by both countries, it is administered with support from the United Nations under a special arrangement intended to avoid conflict while a final status is negotiated.

South Sudan, which relies on Abyei’s stability for broader national and border security, views UNISFA’s presence as a key element in maintaining peace. The mission also plays a role in humanitarian access, civilian protection and monitoring military activity along the contested border.
