(AWEIL) – The Governor of Northern Bahr el Ghazal State, Simon Ober Mawut, on Wednesday inspected ongoing rehabilitation works on key internal roads in Aweil Town.

The visit focused on road sections linking the Aweil Teachers Training Institute and Northern Bahr el Ghazal University, as well as the roads that connect the residential neighbourhoods of Mathiang, Maper West, and Rum-Akurdit.

Governor Ober’s tour was intended to assess the progress of the rehabilitation project, identify any challenges and demonstrate the state government’s commitment to improving public infrastructure.

Officials accompanying the governor said the visit also aimed to encourage the workers and reaffirm the administration’s interest in ensuring the quality and timeliness of the road works.

Local authorities have stated that the upgraded roads are expected to significantly improve local transport, making it easier for students, residents and traders to move within the town. Improved connectivity is likely to support economic activity in the area and provide safer and faster routes for pedestrians and vehicles.

The exact budget of the project has not been disclosed, but officials confirmed that the funding comes from the state government’s infrastructure allocation.

Project Area Description Estimated Impact
Aweil Teachers Institute–University Road rehabilitation linking two education centres Improved access for students, staff
Mathiang–Maper West–Rum-Akurdit Residential road upgrades Easier daily movement for residents
General Benefit Enhanced local connectivity, smoother transport Economic uplift, safer roads

Community leaders in Aweil have welcomed the initiative, noting that poor road conditions have long hindered access to essential services, especially during the rainy season. They hope that the current efforts will not only improve travel within Aweil Town but also serve as a model for similar projects across Northern Bahr el Ghazal and beyond.

In a broader national context, the road rehabilitation in Aweil reflects South Sudan’s renewed focus on basic infrastructure development, a priority outlined in several policy statements by the transitional government.

With economic activity gradually picking up in parts of the country, particularly in states like Northern Bahr el Ghazal that have remained relatively stable, the demand for reliable transport routes is rising.

The government has repeatedly stated its intention to improve road access as a step towards national development and peace consolidation.

Ober’s visit aligns with this larger national agenda, which seeks to link communities, stimulate local economies and rebuild public confidence in state institutions.

The rehabilitation of internal roads in Aweil is expected to be completed in phases, with initial segments being opened before the end of the rainy season later this year. Officials have urged residents to cooperate with road crews and remain patient during periods of partial road closures.

The Northern Bahr el Ghazal state government has indicated it will pursue similar infrastructure projects in other counties, depending on the availability of funding. While external support from international donors remains limited in this sector, state authorities are relying on local resources and planning to partner with private contractors where possible.
