(Juba) – The Government of South Sudan has confirmed the full payment of salaries for members of the South Sudan People’s Defence Forces (SSPDF), other organised forces, and civil servants across the country.

This development, announced on 28 June 2025, has brought temporary relief to public sector workers following delays that had caused concern in recent months.

The payments cover salaries up to 24 June 2025 and were made under the directive of President Salva Kiir Mayardit. The President had instructed the Economic Cluster, led by Vice President Dr Benjamin Bol Mel, to prioritise the issue of public salary arrears despite the country’s ongoing economic pressures.

According to the Office of the Vice President for the Economic Cluster and the Ministry of Finance, civil servants began receiving their salaries as of Friday, 28 June.

The confirmation was met with cautious optimism by public workers and the wider population, who have faced increasing economic hardship due to inflation, currency depreciation, and irregular payments over the past year.

Speaking through an official statement, the Economic Cluster said the government is aware of the liquidity challenges in the financial system and assured the public that efforts are underway to resolve the situation.

It promised that further stability in cash availability should be expected by next month, with plans already in motion to address broader structural financial issues.

Although the local market exchange rate remains volatile, with 1 US Dollar equal to 4,650 South Sudanese Pounds (SSP) officially and around 7,000 SSP on the parallel market, the latest payments offer a short term reprieve to security forces and civil employees who have been struggling to meet basic needs.

Sustained salary payments and improved liquidity are crucial steps if South Sudan is to restore public confidence in the economy. However, many citizens are waiting to see if the government will maintain regular salary schedules in the coming months.
