(WESTERN EQUATORIA) – A South Sudan People’s Defense Forces (SSPDF) officer was tragically killed in an attack by armed groups in the Maringi area of Tambura County, local officials have reported.

Tambura County Commissioner Mathew Mabenge informed media that the conflict occurred on Wednesday, resulting in a fierce exchange of gunfire between government forces and unidentified armed assailants. He stated that another officer was injured from a gunshot wound to the leg.

Mabenge expressed uncertainty regarding any reported casualties among the armed groups involved in the clash.

Security forces have initiated an investigation into the attack, with Mabenge urging residents to remain calm during this time. He also implored the national government to promptly intervene in order to establish sustainable peace in the area.

Acknowledging the presence of a U.N. Development Programme team in Tambura to assess and support the 2018 revitalized peace agreement, Mabenge underlined the community’s persistent calls for state and national authorities to address the ongoing violence that has resulted in numerous fatalities since the outbreak of conflict in June 2021.

Whilst the incident was confirmed by Western Equatoria State Police Commissioner, Maj. Gen. Philip Madut Tong, no further details were provided at this time.
